Michael Frey signed a new deal with QPR this summer to extend his stay in West London
Michael Frey signed a new deal with Queens Park Rangers this summer to extend his stay in West London, despite the club initially triggering an extension of his previous deal at the end of last season.
QPR started life under incoming French boss Julien Stephan in difficult form, drawing their opening fixture at home to Preston North End, followed by three straight losses on the bounce, including a 7-1 hammering away to Coventry City.
It was early days, but it was a bleak period for Stephan and his supporters, who, if this was a sign of things to come, were rightly worried about this upcoming season.
Since then, however, the R's have gone five consecutive games undefeated, winning three and drawing two, in what has been a dramatic change of form.
Following a 1-0 home victory over Stoke City, the club announced that they had struck a new deal with Swiss forward Frey, who had played just 13 minutes of football this season before signing a new deal.
The club had initially triggered an extension of his deal at the end of last season to keep him at the club, but has since decided to tie him down to new terms, and will provide a dominant physical presence in the forward areas of the pitch when called upon.
According to Capology, Frey is earning somewhere in the region of £15k per week at QPR, which makes him roughly the joint-fourth highest earner at the club.
Frey is earning double the amount of teammate Richard Kone, who is the club's top scorer (3) at this point in the season, following his move from Wycombe Wanderers this summer, having been highly coveted.
Upon signing his new deal with the club, QPR CEO Christian Nourry said, "We are happy to renew our commitment to Michi.
"In his time at QPR, he has acclimatised to the rigours of the Championship, finishing the 2024/25 campaign as our top scorer in all competitions.
"His battling qualities, big heart, aerial ability and relentless pursuit of improving and bettering himself and others on the pitch will be in evidence again in the coming weeks and months."
Frey followed up by saying, "I feel very good, I feel happiness. I feel like this is home, it's like family now.
"To score goals and to help the team in this league, you have to be physically ready, and fight with the defence.
"here is intensity in the training and I really hope we can do good things. The aim this season is not to be fighting relegation, it's to be at the better end of the table."
Frey will have to compete with the likes of Kone and Rumarn Burrell for a place in the centre-forward role, but he has the benefit of being a much more physical presence than either of them.
Around him, he will be facilitated by the likes of Ilias Chair, Koki Saito, Paul Smyth, Kwame Poku, Rayan Kolli, Karamoko Dembele, and Harvey Vale, who will all no doubt look to play off the big Swiss striker.
Frey has scored just nine league goals for the R's since his move from Schalke in January 2023, having scored eight of them last season.
The 31-year-old is unlikely to start every game in West London given his competition, but he will no doubt earn significant playing time as the season progresses, and will allow QPR to play more directly whenever called upon.
