Birmingham City have been told how much it will cost to sign Mateo Joseph from Leeds United this summer
Birmingham City are among the clubs eyeing a move for Mateo Joseph this summer ahead of their return to the Championship.
It was reported back in June by GiveMeSport that the Blues are competing to sign the Spaniard in the transfer market, as Chris Davies looks to bolster his attacking options.
The Midlands outfit earned promotion from League One at the first time of asking last season, earning a record 111 points on their way to the title.
Birmingham will now be keen to prove their competitiveness at the top end of the second division straight away, with their long-term aim being cementing their place in the Premier League.
The signing of Joseph could be a move that helps them in that goal, but first they will need to meet Leeds United’s asking price for the 21-year-old.
It has been reported by Alan Nixon that Leeds are holding out for up to £10 million for Joseph this summer.
It has been claimed that both Celta Vigo and Real Betis are both keen on the forward, adding further competition for Birmingham in their pursuit of the player.
Joseph has Championship experience, and knows what it takes to gain promotion from the Premier League after helping Daniel Farke’s side win the second tier title last season.
It’s understood that the Whites are hoping to raise funds in order to pursue Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz, with one offer already having been rejected by the London outfit this summer.
It was reported by The Athletic that Real Betis had a loan offer turned down for Joseph, which included an option to buy.
It’s believed that the Spanish side had a bid worth £10 million refused back in January, with the Yorkshire outfit still fighting for promotion.
But now it’s likely that a similar offer would be successful amid reports of a £10 million asking price.
Farke is looking to use a potential sale to bolster the club’s chances of signing their priority target to lead the line this season.
Joseph came through the academy system at Leeds to earn his place in the first team senior squad.
However, he has been unable to cement himself as a regular starter under Farke, starting 11 of his 39 league appearances last season.
He contributed three goals and three assists for the Whites as they earned 100 points on their way to automatic promotion to the Premier League.
The 21-year-old has made a total of 62 league appearances in total for the Yorkshire outfit, including three in the Premier League.
Birmingham have had a busy summer so far since gaining promotion to the Championship.
Davies has already added the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Kanya Fujimoto to the Blues’ first team squad.
Permanent deals have also been secured for Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Alfons Sampsted after loan spells at St. Andrew’s last season.
James Beadle and Tommy Doyle have also joined on loan from Brighton and Wolves, respectively.
