The Welsh outfit aren't looking to be conservative with their summer spending.

Wrexham are going to join Hull City in the battle to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien, as a mega bid by the League One promotion winners is readied.

The 26-year-old's inability to force his way into the Forest first team has opened his door to plenty of second tier outfits over recent seasons. O'Brien has been on loan four times since the start of his parent club's first season back in the Premier League. Two of them were to teams in the Championship, the other two were to sides in the United States.

O'Brien, yet again, is a player that Forest are willing to let go of. This time there is interest in a permanent deal for him from the aforementioned pair of second tier clubs.

Wrexham join Hull in Lewis O'Brien transfer battle

Wrexham are the latest to reveal their interest in O'Brien. It has been reported by Alan Nixon that the Red Dragons, who are owned by Hollywood superstars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, are willing to break their club transfer record in order to bring in the former Huddersfield Town man.

A bid of £5 million is expected, as per Nixon, but that falls short of the £8 million that Forest reportedly want for him.

Hull are supposedly willing to pay a similar fee as Wrexham. Their desire to sign the 26-year-old was also reported by The Sun journalist. They were not the only ones said to be interested in O'Brien, but the others - Birmingham City, Preston North End, Southampton and Swansea City - were hoping to temporarily acquire the midfielder.

The asking price that Forest have set was reported by Hull Live to be a potential issue for the Tigers. If they are unwilling to raise their offer, that could leave Wrexham alone at the negotiating table with Nuno Espirito Santo's side, therefore handing them a big boost to their hopes of landing O'Brien.

Wrexham need some more players in their 20s

Phil Parkinson has generally targeted older players this summer.

Aside from their only signing of the summer so far - Ryan Hardie, 28 - many of the links between them and the available talent on the market has been to those who are above 30.

Case in point, former Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward, 32, is set to have a medical with the Welsh side soon ahead of his move to the Racecourse.

Having a general air of experience about your side isn't necessarily a bad thing. A mix of both wisdom and the qualities that come with youth is, however, required to create the most balanced equation. O'Brien would add a nice amount of both to Parkinson's team.
