A look at how much Ross Stewart earns at Southampton amid suggestions he is set to earn a contract on reduced salary at St Mary's.

Southampton find themselves in a tricky position whereby they once again head into the final few months of the campaign not entirely sure exactly what division they will be in next season.

Having started the season really slowly under the management of former Stade de Reims and Lens boss Will Still, Saints did initially improve with Tonda Eckert at the helm on an interim basis.

However, having then been given the job permanently, Eckert has got more inconsistent results in the last couple of months as the south coast outfit sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table.

They have been extremely busy, both in terms of outgoings and incomings, throughout this season and yet still find themselves in a position where further business will be expected this summer.

That is for a variety of factors but one, perhaps most pressing, is the wages that have previously been offered to players that are now surely unaffordable if they do miss out on an immediate return to the Premier League – and Ross Stewart is a good example of that.

There has been talk that one of those pieces of business that will be done at St Mary’s is offering Ross Stewart a new contract, with the Scotsman set to be a free agent this summer.

Stewart himself has said that he would ‘definitely be interested’ in signing a new contract with Saints. It has, though, been reported that the former Sunderland striker will be offered a contract on reduced terms.

That is quite reasonable because, according to Capology, the injury prone 29-year-old is currently earning £20,000 per week.

He isn’t the highest earner at the club with, quite staggeringly, ten players who are earning more than him at the moment but that in itself, as well as his own wage, does perhaps speak volumes for the fairly shoddy business that has been done by the club in recent seasons.

Ross Stewart has struggled to make an impact at Southampton

In the summer of 2023, having scored 40 goals in 81 appearances across all competitions for Sunderland, including ten in 13 Championship matches in an injury-hit 2022/23 campaign, Southampton took the plunge on Stewart and brought him from the Stadium of Light for a fee believed to be in the region of £6 million.

He remained prolific with the Black Cats despite warnings with regards to his ability to stay consistently fit – and Southampton did not take heed of those warnings, instead taking a risk on his unquestionable quality.

It didn’t have a major impact on them in the 2023/24 season, albeit their big money striker signing managed just four appearances for Saints as they gained promotion back to the top-flight via the play-offs.

Once again, an injury hit Premier League season limited Stewart to just 12 games with his first goal for the club coming on the final day of the campaign against Arsenal.

Stewart has had much more of an impact this season and yet injury has still majorly affected his overall influence on the team – and that will be a concern, and it is especially something to note with regards to his potential new contract.
