Newcastle have been tipped to complete a permanent deal with Southampton for Aaron Ramsdale, but how much will the Saints save on his wages?

Aaron Ramsdale has recently been tipped to make his loan move with Newcastle United a permanent one by former scout Mick Brown.

In an interview with Football Insider, Brown claimed that signing a new goalkeeper isn't going to be the highest priority deal for Eddie Howe to complete this summer, which meant that it could be somewhat of an 'easy' deal to finalise a permanent agreement with Ramsdale whilst he's still with the club.

“I don’t think signing a new goalkeeper is going to be at the top of their list. Eddie Howe has other positions he would like to strengthen first.

“So looking at it, the Ramsdale deal would be a pretty easy one for them to complete, and it would mean they go into next season with the same two goalkeepers.

“I don’t think that would be the end of the world for them if it then allows them to focus their efforts elsewhere, and I think that’s what they’re now planning to do.”

The goalkeeper signed on loan for Newcastle from Southampton, after the Saints were relegated from the Premier League, in what was a dismal campaign from start to finish, as they only won twice in their 38 league matches in the top-flight during the 2024/25 season.

Ramsdale has struggled to nail down a regular spot in the Newcastle starting XI, and has featured in plenty of cup competitions, which is unlikely to be exactly the game time he's looking for.

Nick Pope seems to be Eddie Howe's first choice goalkeeper to have between the posts, and so Ramsdale will have to impress whenever he's called upon by the Newcsatle boss.

Saints could save six-figure fee on Aaron Ramsdale wages

It's been revealed through estimated figures at Capology, that Ramsdale is on wages of £120,000 per week at Newcastle United, and so, from a financial perspective, it wouldn't be the worst option for Southampton to move him on permanently in the summer.

The shot-stopper has looked settled in the Premier League, and is more than good enough to be playing regularly at that level, and so it's likely to be a deal that Newcastle are keen to complete.

Southampton are looking to win promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this season, but the Championship has been as unpredictable as ever this term, and there's no guarantee that the Saints will be able to force themselves into the top-flight for the 2026/27 campaign.

If the Saints weren't to gain promotion this season, then keeping a player of Ramsdale's quality with the eye-opening wages is highly unlikely to be sustainable for a club in England's second-tier.

Ramsdale's wages vs Southampton squad

Capology has revealed that Southampton's highest paid player at this moment in time is Finn Azaz, who is reportedly on £50,000 per week with the Championship club.

When it comes to comparing Ramsdale's wages to other goalkeepers in the Southampton squad, former Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is on £40,000 per week with the Saints, whilst Daniel Peretz is on £12,500 per week.

With Southampton showing improvement in recent months, plenty of their supporters would probably argue that Ramsdale's wages could be spent better elsewhere on the first-team squad, regardless of whether they're playing their football in the Championship or Premier League.

Ramsdale's current contract with Southampton is set to expire in the summer of 2028, and it would be interesting to hear whether the club are keen to keep hold of him if they were to be promoted this term.

However, that decision could be taken out of their hands, as Newcastle have the option to make his loan spell a permanent move at St James' Park at the end of the 2025/26 season.
