West Bromwich Albion striker Daryl Dike has suffered yet another injury setback, with the American forward ruled out until possibly the September international break.

It was confirmed that Dike sustained a thigh injury during training ahead of Albion's opening Championship game on Saturday, which is against Blackburn Rovers at The Hawthorns.

Since arriving in the West Midlands for a transfer fee of about £7.4m in 2022 from Orlando City, Dike has missed nearly 75 per cent of possible games through injury, amounting to a total of 128 out of a possible 171.

Football League World takes a look at the eye-watering amount the Baggies have forked out in wages to Dike, by using Capology estimates.

The cost of Dike's injury nightmare at West Brom

Dike's injury record seems to unfortunately keep getting worse - a hamstring injury in his first start against Peterborough kept him out for six months.

He then suffered a thigh problem in the 22/23 opener against Stoke City, followed by a ruptured achilles tendon that sidelined him for 10 months.

Just five games into his comeback, lightning struck twice when he tore his left achilles against Ipswich - and he left the pitch in tears.

So, using Capology estimates, since arriving at The Hawthorns three and a half years ago, West Brom have paid dike an estimated £32,308-per-week across 187.9 weeks of employment.

This translates to a whopping £6,069,289 in wages for a player who has managed just 43 appearances in all competitions.

The numbers make for sobering reading when broken down further.

Albion have effectively paid £141,146 per appearance and £674,365 per goal for Dike's nine strikes during his time at the club.

How much West Brom still owe Dike

The latest thigh injury means Dike will miss at least the opening four Championship games against Rovers, Wrexham, Portsmouth and Stoke City - as well as the Carabao Cup first round tie against Derby County.

With his contract running until June 2026, West Brom still owe him approximately £1.5m in wages over the remaining 46-odd weeks left on his deal.

This means that unless the Baggies can find a buyer willing to take on his wages, they face paying out over £7.5m in total wages to a player who has started just 16 league matches during his time at the club so far.

Dike's wage on Capology makes him the highest-paid player at the club. The second-highest is Darnell Furlong on £25k-per-week, so it's obviously difficult to justify the American's wage given his persistent unavailability.

The Baggies have invested in Norwegian striker Aune Heggebo this summer - basically acknowledging that they cannot rely on Dike, or even Josh Maja for that matter, to lead the line consistently.

At 25-years-old, time is running out for both player and club to salvage something from what has arguably become one of the Championship's most expensive transfer disasters in recent memory.
