Palmeiras reconvened on Wednesday night without their seven World Cup call-ups, who will remain in the United States until their national teams’ campaigns finish.

According to Globo.com, the club will manage each case individually, even where one nation has multiple players. Paraguay’s trio are Gustavo Gómez, Mauricio and Ramón Sosa.

All still have a chance of reaching the knockouts, so they remain active. If a team goes far, a player might have no holiday, with Flaco López the likeliest example as Argentina are among the favourites and Lionel Messi is one of the tournament’s leading scorers.

Giay’s situation offers a template. Palmeiras and AFA agreed he would stay with the Argentina squad for part of the group stage, then he was given leave before reporting back.

If eliminated, some players could receive a short recess. The final round of group matches began on Wednesday, and Paraguay face Australia on Thursday at 23:00 in Santa Clara.

Uruguay, with Piquerez and Emiliano Martínez, also need a positive result to progress. Argentina and Colombia have 100% records. Palmeiras return on 23 July against Coritiba at 21:30 at Couto Pereira in the 19th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
