Rayan Fofana’s audacious panenka at Décines sent Lens towards the Coupe de France semi-finals and showcased a fearless rise. The 20-year-old, whose career was paused for five months by a medical scare, has impressed with icy calm and has long been on Pierre Sage’s radar. According to L'Équipe, he is among Ligue 1’s most efficient forwards.

At Groupama Stadium on Thursday, the number 35 had not touched the ball since coming on after Lyon’s stoppage-time equaliser. He then chipped home in the shootout, the first of Lens’s five successful kicks, after a 2-2 draw that finished 5-4 on penalties.

Promoted to the U19s at 16 and galvanised by Yohan Démont, he lit up 2023-2024 in the league and Youth League, scoring against Arsenal, Sevilla and Olympiakos. Inside the club he is viewed as unfazed by pressure and he joined at 13 from Espérance de Paris.

Lens feared his path might be over, then parked his career for four to five months until the problem eased and he was declared fully fit for intensive football. He turned professional on 30 October 2024 and made his Ligue 1 debut on 1 March 2025 at Le Havre, a 3-4 defeat.

Sage accelerated his rise, keeping him despite loan interest including Annecy and trusting him from the start of this season. Fofana started against OL, scored at Le Havre on 24 August and netted his first at Bollaert in the 3-0 derby with Lille, then extended his deal to 2029 in mid-December.
