The former Wales international superstar never played for the Bluebirds, but he enjoyed a stellar career, impressing in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur before winning five Champions League titles with Real Madrid.

Bale is a popular figure among Cardiff fans thanks to his legendary performances for the Wales national side, which culminated in qualification for the 2022 World Cup and, before that, a mesmeric run to the EURO 2016 semi-finals in France.

Meanwhile, there was speculation that the 36-year-old was interested in a Bluebirds takeover last summer following the Welsh capital outfit's relegation from the Championship.

Boss Brian Barry-Murphy subsequently steered Cardiff to promotion from League One alongside champions Lincoln City and play-off winners Bolton Wanderers, so they will be playing their football in the second tier once again next season.

Cardiff are vying to ready their squad for the Championship, and will need to have a successful summer transfer window to be competitive in the second tier.

The Bluebirds' League One success was largely built on the strong performances from youth academy graduates like Ronan Kpakio and Dylan Lawlor, but they will need more experience among their ranks next term.

Goalkeeper Nathan Trott's previous loan move from Copenhagen became a permanent deal following the Welsh capital club's promotion, but Barry-Murphy still has lots of work to do ahead of a testing Championship campaign.

Trott was a key figure for the Bluebirds last season, maintaining 16 clean sheets in 41 League One appearances and should adjust well to the second tier.

Meanwhile, speaking to Front Office Sports, Bale discussed whether he may buy Cardiff: "There's those heartstrings that pull there."

He continued: "It’s about being patient, finding the right club, and the right path for us to take. That doesn’t mean Cardiff is off the table. But I think now we have a bit of time, and will look around."

As per BBC Sport, the former Southampton, Tottenham, and Real Madrid man has formed a sports fund with American private equity firm Juggernaut Capital, who are planning to invest in teams and leagues across both men's and women's sports.

The report added that Bluebirds chairman Mehmet Dalman said current owner Vincent Tan was not interested in selling the South Wales club last summer, amid takeover speculation.

Tan has been at Cardiff's ownership helm since 2010, meaning that he has overseen them in the Premier League, Championship, and League One.

The Malaysian left Bluebirds supporters disillusioned when he changed their home kit from blue to red in 2012, and ultimately reversed that decision three years later.

According to Wales Online, Bale has a net worth of around £120million, but it remains unclear whether Tan will open the door to a takeover from the former Madrid winger.

Cardiff's relegation from the Championship to League One was one of the toughest moments in their modern history, but Barry-Murphy got the Bluebirds moving in the right direction once again by winning promotion back to the second tier at the first time of asking.

The 47-year-old is now tasked with the bigger challenge of ensuring his side are competitive in the second tier, and must not be distracted by talk of a potential takeover as he continues to conduct business in the transfer market.
