Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United can both boast strong attendances so far this season

Sheffield Wednesday have dropped down into League One following a difficult previous campaign.

The Owls went into administration in October 2025, and a new owner wasn’t installed until the very beginning of May 2026.

The Yorkshire outfit suffered the embarrassment of being relegated by February, with rivals Sheffield United enjoying the honour of officially sending them down from the Championship.

Chris Wilder’s side finished an underwhelming 13th, enduring a fall from grace of their own after reaching the play-off final in 2025.

But both clubs will be optimistic that they can achieve better things in 2026/27, with the two sides enjoying a promising start to the campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday began their season away from home with a 2-1 win against Leyton Orient before hosting Bradford City.

While the Owls were unable to secure another positive result against the Bantams, they still managed to pack 33,188 fans into Hillsborough for the fixture (all figures from Fotmob).

Their next home game came in the EFL Cup against Championship side Wolves on a Tuesday evening, which fewer supporters turned up for.

The attendance at Hillsborough for this 2-0 defeat was 13,586, with Henrik Pedersen’s side suffering elimination from the competition.

But their third home game of the season, and their second in the league, saw a return to normality, with 30,006 in attendance for the Owls’ impressive 7-2 win over the newly-promoted Bromley.

Goals from Callum Slattery, Mason Burstow and Gabriel Otegbayo, as well as braces from Barry Bannan and Jamal Lowe, sealed a comfortable first home win of the new season.

If Sheffield Wednesday are to enjoy a first year under new owners Arise Capital, then turning Hillsborough back into a fortress could be key, as they set their sights on a possible promotion battle.

Sheffield United began their Championship campaign at home against Birmingham City, with the two sides playing out a 0-0 draw.

There were 27,684 supporters at Bramall Lane to see the hotly-contested clash, with both clubs aiming to fight for promotion this season.

However, there weren’t as many packed into Bramall Lane for their second home game of the term, when Wilder’s side hosted Bolton Wanderers on 1 September.

There were 25,714 fans in attendance for the entertaining midweek clash in which the hosts took home all three points.

Goals from Japhet Tanganga, Patrick Bamford and Romelle Donovan secured a dramatic victory, with the winner coming in stoppage time.

Xavier Simons had put the visitors ahead in the opening minute, but the Blades were level just a few moments later through Tanganga.

Bolton’s second through Sam Dalby was also immediately cancelled out with an equaliser, before Wilder’s side took the lead in the 93rd minute.

So despite competing in the Championship, Sheffield United haven’t been able to beat their local rivals for attendance figures so far this season, but it is of course still early days.
