Sunderland Echo notes that a ticket to the pictures was 54 pence and a tot of spirits cost 15 pence. You could even hire a black and white TV with push-button channel change for £2.50 a month.

On the high street, a jacket from Sgt Peppers was £6.50, while quality suede handbags at Binns were £3.90. Crackers were 14 pence, and a four-pack of Rolos was 23 pence.

Bigger buys looked different too. An almost new Hillman Hunter was £895 with a £145 deposit at Bridge Street Motors, and Ivesons in Houghton offered a Puch moped for £90 including road tax, number plate and comprehensive insurance.

Today, a one-year-old comparable saloon could set you back £35,000, and a single house spirit typically ranges from £3.50 to £5.50. Similar suede handbags can top £110.
