Saturday 28th February set the stage for a blockbuster night in Liga MX, as six of the league’s biggest sides collided and sent shockwaves through the standings.

The matchday began with a statement fixture as league leaders Chivas made the trip to reigning Liga MX champions Toluca a mouthwatering contest that pitted proven experience against emerging youth.

Moments after the final whistle at the Estadio Nemesio Diez, attention quickly shifted north to the Estadio BBVA, where Monterrey hosted reigning Concacaf Champions Cup holders Cruz Azul in a heavyweight clash between two of the Apertura’s semi-finalists.

Lastly, we went back to the capital as Mexico’s most successful team and recent trichampions, Club América, met the Apertura’s runners-up Tigres.

Let’s take a look at the big results of the week and how they have altered the current Liga MX Clausura table.

Toluca 2-0 Chivas: The wheels start to fall off for Los Rojiblancos

Chivas’ visit to Mexico State marked a second-straight defeat following a run of six wins to start the year.

It took Los Rojos Diablos just five minutes to seize control, as Jesús Gallardo calmly converted from the penalty spot. Ten minutes later, they doubled their advantage, Paulinho’s excellent hold-up play creating the opening before he slipped the ball into the path of Jorge Díaz, who marked his first goal since arriving from Cancún FC.

Chivas thought they had a way back into the game on two occasions when Armando González had the ball in the back of the net, but his celebrations were cut short both times when the offside flag was raised.

Gallardo and Díaz’s goals mean that Chivas fall to second in the league with only one point separating the top three teams.

This hard run of difficult games continues this weekend for Los Rojiblancos as they return to Guadalajara, this time facing city-rivals Atlas in the Clásico Tapatío.

In the case of Toluca, they are back in action sooner, heading to the capital to face Pumas at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

Monterrey 0-2 Cruz Azul: La Máquina go top on Super Saturday

Los Rayados have only won three of their eight games to start the Clausura campaign, as defeat to Cruz Azul causes more concern.

Rodolfo Rotondi was the first to score, coming six minutes after José Paradela failed to convert from a penalty, but the points were all wrapped up on the hour mark when Agustín Palavecino doubled the visitors’ lead, scoring his fourth goal of the year.

The result leaves Doménec Torrent’s side with only one win in their last five matches, suffering defeat to all three of Mexico City’s teams in that time.

As for Cruz Azul, they head to the top of the table for the first time this season, taking advantage of Chivas’ loss to Toluca.

In order to maintain their place at the top of the table, La Máquina will need maximum points during their midweek visit to Torreón when they face bottom-side Santos Laguna, as Monterrey will be hoping to get back on track when they host a struggling Querétaro side.

Club América 1-4 Tigres: Las Águilas got mulled by the Tigers at home

Mexico’s capital was stunned in the final fixture of this Super Saturday when Club América suffered a heavy defeat to Tigres.

Inspired by a Juan Brunetta brace, Las Águilas looked on course to complete the comeback when Brían Rodríguez’s curler reduced the defeat to one, but Tigres restored their two-goal advantage less than 90 seconds later when Ángel Correa put Los Felinos on track for a special win on the road.

Three points for Tigres moves them above their weekend rivals into 6th as América currently hold onto the final playoff spot.

Club América will look to quickly forget about this result by welcoming FC Juárez to the capital, whilst Tigres head south to Puebla in an effort to build on their big weekend win.
