Newcastle have struggled for consistency in the Premier League this season, where they remain in the bottom half of the table. They were eliminated from the FA Cup by Manchester City last time out, but remain in good form in Europe. After narrowly missing out on automatic qualification for the last 16, the Magpies destroyed Qarabag 9-3 on aggregate. This is now the furthest Newcastle have ever gone in the Champions League.
Barcelona are leading the way in La Liga and have been strong in the Champions League, finishing fifth in the league phase. They have already visited St James’ Park earlier this season, when they won 2-1 courtesy of a Marcus Rashford brace.
“Yes it is [the biggest game in the club’s history], in recent history,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe. “Someone could trip me up by going way back, and I’m sure they will. But I think in recent history, for me it is.
“We’re going to need to use every psychological tool that we can to help us in this game. Because it is undeniable. We are playing a very, very good team.”
Ahead of facing Lamine Yamal, Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall admitted: “It goes without saying he’s obviously a special talent. I’ve seen him play in enough Champions League games, I know what he’s about.
“I want to test myself against the best players in the world. No better opportunity to do so than the game tomorrow. Really looking forward to it.”
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick said: “The Premier League is a great league. For me it is the best league in the world. They have strong teams and a lot of money to make the right decisions.”
