Champions League winners face Europa League holders in Salzburg

The European football season officially starts here with an UEFA Super Cup showdown between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa tonight.

PSG are back at this showpiece for a second year running after successfully retaining their Champions League crown by beating Arsenal on penalties in Budapest, Hungary, at the end of May.

Standing in the way of Luis Enrique’s trophy-hungry side is another Premier League team in Aston Villa after they made light work of Freiburg in last season’s Europa League final, with Unai Emery continuing his love story with the competition.

Three months on from ending their long wait for major silverware, Villa are in with a chance of lifting another European trophy.

However, their task has been made somewhat harder with key trio Emiliano Martinez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins all absent having been given more time off following the World Cup.

PSG are in a similar situation, though Luis Enrique has included the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Fabian Ruiz, Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue in his travelling squad, while Lucas Digne could feature against his former club - just days after leaving Villa Park.

Tonight’s clash at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg is just the third-ever meeting between the two teams. The previous two came in the 2024-2025 Champions League quarter-finals when PSG squeezed through 5-4 on aggregate.
