Sunderland host Liverpool on Wednesday, aiming to protect the Premier League’s only remaining unbeaten home record. Sunderland Echo highlights the broader picture ahead of the game.

The Black Cats have played 12 home league matches since returning to the top flight, winning seven and drawing five, with 21 scored and just nine conceded. They sit fourth in the home-form standings, behind Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United. Only Arsenal and City have conceded fewer.

A win would lift Sunderland above United into third in this table. If Manchester City were to lose at home to Fulham at the same time, the two sides would be level on 29 points.

Sunderland’s last home defeat in league play was 1-0 against QPR in May, shortly before the Championship play-offs. Their last Premier League home loss came on 13 May 2017, a 2-0 reverse to Swansea City.

The rankings also throw up surprises. Tottenham are 17th for home form with just two wins from 12, while only Wolves have fewer points. Newcastle sit 10th with seven wins and 23 points from 13, having lost their last two at St James’ Park, their most recent home victory a 4-3 against Leeds in early January.
