Raul Jimenez is returning to Wolves three years on, a full-circle move completed at speed before Mexico’s World Cup opener.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, talks started the week before Fulham visited Molineux and accelerated after that final home game. Chairman Nathan Shi, backed by head coach Rob Edwards and the hierarchy, led the push after speaking with Jimenez and his family.
Jimenez lit up 2018 to 2020 for Wolves, then a horrific head injury stalled him before a revival at Fulham. His Wolves farewell in 2022/23 turned sour when Julen Lopetegui left him unused, prompting a thrown jacket and tearful lap.
After the Fulham match last month, Jimenez signalled openness to a reunion, and partner Daniela Basso’s posts underlined the family’s affection for club and city. A strong Championship salary and a rousing Si Senor welcome also influenced him.
Despite MLS interest and one more lucrative Premier League offer, the 35-year-old chose to drop to the Championship. With the World Cup looming, he made his decision last week and informed Wolves.
To finish before Mexico’s opener, a three-strong Wolves delegation flew to the Mexico camp on Sunday and returned Wednesday. Matt Wild handled contracts, Phil Hayward the medical, and Yannie Makarounas media, with logistical help from the Mexican FA.
A fan favourite now has unfinished business at Molineux and a chance to add to his legacy. Adam Armstrong has vacated the number nine shirt for Jimenez.
