Huddersfield Town couldn't strike gold twice with the Chelsea prospect

Huddersfield Town thought they struck gold when they signed Tino Anjorin in 2022, but that didn’t end up being the case.

Following their Premier League fairytale, Town found themselves back in the Championship at the start of the 2019/20 campaign, but couldn’t challenge for promotion immediately.

The Terriers spent their first term back in the second-tier in mid-table, before narrowly avoiding relegation by just six points the year afterwards, with any hopes of a return to the top-flight looking to fade.

However, that all changed during the 2021/22 season under the management of Carlos Corberan, who had transformed them from an uncompetitive Championship side to one that were capable of mixing it with any team in the division.

Huddersfield quickly showed that they were capable of putting together strong runs of form, winning four and drawing one of their first seven matches to join the early promotion chase.

These performances continued throughout the festive period and into January, with Huddersfield enjoying a nine-game unbeaten streak as they edged towards deadline day.

One of their star players so far that term had been Levi Colwill, a young defender on loan from Premier League side Chelsea, who showed immense class and technical ability whilst operating in Yorkshire.

With Huddersfield sat within the top six and just a few points shy of the automatic promotion places, the time came for them to make some last-minute business which could have a huge say in where they finished come May.

After seeing how well Colwill had performed, the Terriers decided to revisit Chelsea and see if the West London outfit had any other budding talent who could join Corberan’s ranks.

In came young midfielder Tino Anjorin, who had come up through the youth ranks with Chelsea and gained quite a reputation as a result.

An England Under-20 international at the time, Anjorin had already played in the Premier League and Champions League for his parent club, which coupled with Colwill’s displays, set expectations sky-high within the Terriers’ fanbase.

This mood was only amplified when Corberan stated that he believed “Tino is one of the most important young talents in Britain.”

With such an exciting young prospect now on board, Huddersfield could no doubt take the next step in their performances and glide into the automatic promotion places.

The Chelsea youngster had previously spent time on loan with Lokomotiv Moscow and scored a Europa League goal for the Russian outfit, but a metatarsal injury cut that period short.

Unfortunately, injury woes would be a theme during Anjorin’s budding years. He wasn’t available to play for Huddersfield until February and when he did, performances weren’t anything to get carried away with.

The playmaker did manage a goal against Coventry City in a 2-1 victory, but just as he was gaining some momentum, an ankle injury ruled him out of action for the rest of the season.

This was a massive blow for Anjorin, having struggled with fitness issues in the past. Huddersfield managed to reach the play-off final that year but were defeated by Nottingham Forest and cruelly denied another shot at the Premier League.

Anjorin’s ability was clear to see, which is why the Terriers signed him again the following season on another loan.

However, his ankle issues continued to leave the attacking midfielder sidelined, limiting him to just 15 league appearances across one and a half seasons in Yorkshire.

A fully fit Tino Anjorin could’ve thrived at Huddersfield Town

Injury problems continued to plague Anjorin in his years after playing for Huddersfield, which ruled out any future with Chelsea.

Whilst it has been revealed by the player himself that this may have been caused by poor advice he was given whilst with the London outfit, it will also make Huddersfield fans wonder what would’ve been possible if he didn’t have any injury woes.

Colwill had performed excellently that season for the Terriers but Anjorin arrived in Yorkshire with an even greater reputation, due to his performances in academy football with Chelsea.

If he hadn’t been affected by injuries and was allowed a consistent run of games for Huddersfield, it may have had a huge impact on their fortunes and could’ve given them the slight edge needed to achieve promotion in 2022.
