“Hugely Impressive” — Southampton Loanee Moses Sesay Making Early Impact At Colchester | OneFootball

Six minutes of competitive senior football was all Moses Sesay had under his belt before joining Colchester on a season-long loan.

Now, just weeks into his first loan spell, the Southampton youngster is already making his mark in League Two.

Since his arrival, the 19-year-old has featured in every match for the U’s, starting four of six league fixtures. Speaking to me, Colchester journalist Jonathan Waldron of the Daily Gazette said that the youngster has slotted in seamlessly.

“Quite simply, he’s been hugely impressive from the moment he arrived on loan from Southampton.”

While in the Southampton under-21s, Sesay offered a versatile profile. He primarily featured in central midfield, yet he had a lengthy spell at left-back last season. The Englishman operated higher up the pitch, more so as an attacking full-back. He recorded his second-highest goal contribution tally (8) in a single campaign too.

Colchester manager Danny Cowley already praised Sesay’s flexibility shortly after his first game against Oldham Athletic.

“Moses has got really good quality, left-footed, but can come and use it and play off the right. He’s versatile; he’s a good footballer, so he can play in different positions.”

Jonathan Waldron supported this as well, mentioning to me how Sesay is flourishing in his role and growing in confidence with each performance.

“Sesay has been playing in a central midfield role, primarily as a number eight, although he has been utilised in wider positions from time to time.

At Colchester, Moses Sesay ranks first for successful dribbles per 90 (2.20) whilst occupying fourth place for chances created (6).

“He had got himself into some great attacking positions and is not afraid to shoot, so it was no surprise to anyone when he scored his first EFL goal in Colchester’s 1-1 draw with Cheltenham at the weekend.”

The 19-year-old averages 3.30 shots per 90 – the most at Colchester – and, as Waldron mentioned, it led to him scoring his first senior goal.

Sesay found himself unmarked in acres of space in the centre. Once he received the ball, he drove up the pitch and played a one-two with the wide player before calmly slotting it home with his first touch.

“Bearing in mind this is his first loan away from Southampton, he’s looked completely comfortable at League Two level,” Waldron added.

“On the evidence of his first few games for the U’s, Sesay looks like he has a very bright future in the game.”

There are already plenty of encouraging signs. He has established himself at Colchester, shown he can step up to League Two level and already picked up both a goal and an assist.

The Southampton loanee is making the most of his opportunity and likely impressing his parent club on the South Coast.
