Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has shed light on his squad selection criteria amid backlash on his omission of in-form Wydad Casablanca forward Thembinkosi Lorch.
The 32-year-old has been in fine form in Morocco, chipping in with five goals in nine appearances across all competitions but was still overlooked by the Belgian mentor in the latest squad.
Along with Lorch, AGF wing-back Gift Links was also snubbed from the team despite eye-catching performances in Denmark. Broos has since explained what makes a Bafana player.
“For every position, first of all, we have a profile of what a Bafana Bafana player has to be - this is the start. What is the profile, the quality is the first important thing, if you don't have quality you don't come to Bafana Bafana,” said the veteran tactician.
"The mentality, very important. So, when we go see games, we don't only look at football technical things but also what is the mentality of the guy. He gets a kick and he's down for five minutes before he starts again then you have to think that's not the guy.
"There's a third step, when he comes to us, how does he behave in the group because I said it before that if you have one guy with a bad mentality in your group - it's done. So, that is first of all. And then for every position there is also a profile.
He went on: "Let's take an example, full-backs have to be back but also offensively strong. So, we have for every position that profile and with that profile we choose the players and it can be that the player has the quality, certainly, but doesn't have the mentality and it happened already that I don't call players anymore because they don't have the right mentality.
Bafana will be back in action when they take on Zambia in an international friendly match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, 15 November.
