Hugo Ekitiké (23) has enjoyed a strong start to life at Liverpool. The Frenchman made a €95m move to Anfield from Eintracht Frankfurt over the summer, however, he has quickly settled, netting three goals in his first four games.
However, it is about to get more difficult for the Frenchman. Liverpool spent big in the transfer window, and on transfer deadline day, the Merseyside club secured one of their biggest targets – Alexander Isak (25). The Swedish forward was desperate to sign for Liverpool, refusing to play for Newcastle United again. The pressure exerted paid off in the final hours of the transfer window as he secured a British transfer record €145m move to Anfield.
He will now likely be in competition with Ekitiké in the starting XI, although both players are also capable of playing on the left of the front three. Speaking ahead of Les Bleus’ FIFA World Cup qualifier against Iceland on Tuesday, Ekitiké evoked the competition with Isak.
“When you play at big clubs, you expect to be in competition with the best players. Isak is a player that I watched, so for him to arrive is great. It will provide tough competition, but I’ll focus on being good and performing well so that it is just the manager’s problem,” he said.
