Hugo Souza faces a decisive day as Carlo Ancelotti names Brazil’s 26 for the 2026 World Cup at 17:00 at the Museu do Amanhã in Rio. The Corinthians goalkeeper is on the 55-man provisional list and could make his first finals.
According to ge.globo, the provisional keepers are Alisson, Ederson, Bento, Hugo Souza, John and Weverton. The expectation is Brazil take three, with Alisson and Ederson near certainties, leaving Hugo competing with Bento for the final spot.
Since Ancelotti took charge, Hugo has been in all five squads, though in March he was only called after Alisson was withdrawn. He has one start, the 3-2 defeat to Japan on 14 October, and missed November 2025 through a left thigh muscle injury.
Even if overlooked today, FIFA rules allow a goalkeeper from the provisional list to replace an injured or ill player at any time during the tournament. Alisson is nearing the end of recovery from a right hamstring injury and has not played since 18 March’s 4-0 win over Galatasaray, yet there remains an expectation he will be called.
Brazil are in Group C, opening against Morocco in New Jersey on 13 June. They then face Haiti in Philadelphia on 19 June and Scotland in Miami on 24 June.
The squad are due to report on 27 at Granja Comary. Domestic football pauses for 50 days, so Hugo would not miss Corinthians matches, though he could miss the FC Cascavel friendly on 12 July at the Estádio Olímpico Regional.
