Hugo Souza hits major milestone for Corinthians keepers this century

On the evening of last Thursday (19th), Corinthians faced Athletico-PR at Arena da Baixada, in a postponed match from the second round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship, and ended up winning 1-0. The only goal of the match was scored by midfielder Rodrigo Garro, at the 21st minute of the first half, with a stunning shot into the top corner past Santos. The victory put the Corinthians team in fifth place with six points – four goals scored and two conceded.

In addition to the three points, the match was special for goalkeeper Hugo Souza, who equaled Doni, becoming the fifth goalkeeper with the most appearances for Corinthians in the 21st century, with 101 games. He is behind only Cássio (712 games), Felipe (194 games), Júlio César (140 games), and Fábio Costa (118 games). By the end of the season, according to the Brazilian calendar, the number 1 could reach, at most, third place, surpassing Júlio César.

The data was released by the portal Meu Timão. In the match against Athletico-PR, according to Sofascore, a sports statistics app, Hugo Souza had the following numbers over 90 minutes: six ball recoveries, 14/38 accurate passes (37%), four clearances, four saves, 49 actions with the ball, and 3/3 successful claims (100%).

Signed in July 2024, initially on loan from Flamengo – acquired permanently in November of the same year after standing out for Chaves, in Portugal, he was decisive in the team’s surge in the previous Brasileirão (from the relegation zone to the Pre-Libertadores), and was also fundamental in winning the Campeonato Paulista (2025), Copa do Brasil (2025), and Supercopa do Brasil (2026).

Corinthians, with Hugo Souza, will return to the pitch next Sunday (22nd), at 8:30 pm (Brasília time), to face Portuguesa at Estádio do Canindé, for the quarterfinals of the Campeonato Paulista. In case of a draw, the decision will go to penalties.
