Manchester City are eyeing up alternatives in the centre-back transfer market this month whilst retaining interest in Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

There is an acceptance that while Guehi remains a leading candidate to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s defence, the complexity of the deal means City cannot afford to place all focus on one target.

That approach aligns with uncertainty that has followed the Guehi pursuit in recent weeks, with some believing that for Crystal Palace, only a “massive offer” would change their stance in wanting to retain the player for the remainder of the season.

Manchester City’s defensive situation has only sharpened urgency, after injuries to Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, John Stones and the ongoing management of Nathan Aké have left Guardiola short of reliable options in central defence.

Max Alleyne has been recalled from loan as cover, and while the 20-year-old has excelled in his opening three appearances and starts, there remains a strong belief that an experienced and ready-made defender is required for the second half of the season.

Now, according to the information of the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, City remain interested in signing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi this month, although it is stressed that it is far from certain a deal can be agreed with the club and the defender.

Despite that interest, the report highlights that City are looking at other defenders, and with Hugo Viana involved last year in an extensive scout for centre-backs, the profile the club are looking at this month is now different.

Rather than focusing solely on a high-profile England international approaching the end of his contract, it remains to be seen whether City could pivot towards a younger defender, perhaps more affordable, or available with fewer contractual complications.

It also reflects Hugo Viana’s influence, as the Portuguese official’s extensive scouting work last year suggests City already have a deep database of options, enabling them to move quickly if the Marc Guehi pursuit becomes unworkable in the coming days.

For now, Marc Guehi remains firmly on Manchester City’s radar, and recent reports of the club ‘pushing’ to change the landscape of the deal show that the door is not closed. But the emergence of alternatives signals a subtle shift in confidence and highlights City’s determination not to be held hostage by a single negotiation.
