Oli McBurnie has poked fun at Hull City teammate Joe Gelhardt after his penalty miss against Wrexham

Hull City have strengthened their ambitions of a top-six finish with their most recent victory away to fellow play-off contenders Wrexham, with the Tigers prevailing as 2-1 victors.

It's been an excellent season thus far at the MKM Stadium, with Hull edging ever closer to confirming their place in the top six this season under the guidance of Bosnian boss Sergej Jakirovic.

Despite not being able to spend a single penny on transfer fees over the last two windows, relying only on free transfers and loans, if anything, they have only gotten better.

Joe Gelhardt opened the scoring for Hull in North Wales with a sublime free-kick, though just a couple of minutes later, he was denied from the penalty spot by Arthur Okonkwo.

Lewis Koumas' glancing header gave the away side a cushion, and Nathan Broadhead's late strike wouldn't be enough to ignite a comeback for Wrexham as Hull took all three points.

Following the game, Tigers striker Oli McBurnie took the opportunity to poke fun at Gelhardt over social media following his penalty miss.

Following Hull's victory, McBurnie didn't waste any time in mocking Gelhardt's penalty miss on social media.

Hull fans' chant of 'Joffy again olé olé' has become popular among the fanbase, with the former Wigan Athletic and Leeds United forward now on 13 league goals this season.

However, McBurnie has decided to add his own little twist to the chant, saying that he will no longer be allowed on penalties following his miss.

Indeed, it was Gelhardt who won the penalty for the Tigers, and having scored all three previous spot kicks in Hull colours, he had every right to take this one.

Despite his penalty miss, McBurnie has given Gelhardt credit where credit is due and complimented him on his free-kick strike just minutes earlier.

Had Hull not won the game, McBurnie likely would've kept his lips sealed. However, all three points headed back to Humberside, so the Scot can poke fun at his teammate all he likes without repercussion.

Sergej Jakirovic must rely on Oli McBurnie and Joe Gelhardt to fire Hull City to promotion

As the Championship season edges ever closer to its conclusion, the margin for error becomes slimmer, and with fewer points up for grabs, every single point counts for much more.

Hull's victory at Wrexham has not only solidified their place in the top six but also created a six-point gap to Wrexham beneath them.

Had they lost that game, the Wlesh outfit would have drawn level on points with the Tigers and overtaken them in the standings on goal difference, making this victory a crucial one in their top-flight hopes.

The forward duo have been imperative to their success this season, with McBurnie having netted 13 goals and grabbed six assists from 28 league appearances, whilst Gelhardt has also scored 13 goals with four assists in 30 league appearances thus far.

Their efforts in front of goal cannot be understated in where they find themselves in the league right now, and Jakirovic must keep getting the best out of them to confirm a spot in the top six.

Though the automatic places are not out of reach just yet, a top-six finish would still be an incredible achievement for a club under a transfer embargo for the entire season, and that must be the aim.

Book their place in the play-offs, and there's no reason why they can't go all the way to Wembley and fire themselves to promotion; as long as Hull have McBurnie and Gelhardt in the team, they cannot be counted out.
