Leon Bailey’s prolonged Aston Villa exit is edging towards a conclusion, with Hull City moving to secure a permanent deal.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the promoted club aim to finalise the transfer by the weekend as the deal advances, and owner Acun Ilicali has indicated on social media that it is almost complete. Bailey is not with Villa’s pre-season squad in the Far East.

The saga has stretched through the summer and, as recently as last weekend, Hull were close to abandoning the pursuit.

Hull returned to the Premier League after beating Middlesbrough in the play-off final, having finished sixth in the Championship.

Bailey’s departure after five years would likely aid Villa’s search for more attacking options, with Unai Emery keen to strengthen. Villa have signed wideman Alejandro Garnacho on loan from Chelsea.

The Jamaica international spent the first half of last season on loan at Roma before a recall. He has 23 goals in 163 Villa appearances since a £25 million move from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021, and turns 29 on Sunday.
