Hull vs Manchester United LIVE: Carrick bemoans key errors as Premier League defeat leaves Red Devils shell-shocked

Hull City celebrated their return to the Premier League with an excellent 2-0 win over Manchester United at a raucous MKM Stadium.

Promoted via the play-offs to the top flight for the first time in a decade, the Tigers got off to a perfect start as centre-halves Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy each struck. The defensive pair were on hand to thunder and head home respectively after balls into the box had caused chaos, with Hull tenacious and well-organised thereafter to hold out for a deserved clean sheet and three points – their first in the Premier League against Manchester United.

It was a disappointing start to Michael Carrick’s permanent time in charge as his side suffered a set-back against a team tipped by many to go back down. The Manchester United manager handed debuts to Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos – with Carlos Baleba seemingly set to follow the midfield duo to Old Trafford – but the visitors cutting edge in forward areas, despite an outing off the bench for Marcus Rashford.

‘Strange’ Bruno Fernandes criticism highlights recurring Man United ‘mistakes’

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes lamented his side making the “same mistakes as we did last season in every away game” following their shock 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull to begin the new Premier League campaign.

There was plenty of optimism around United before kick off after Michael Carrick led them to third place in the Premier League last season but they were brought back to earth as first-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy gave Hull a deserved win on their return to the top-flight.

"Same mistakes as we did last season, every away game we give too much of the ball to them,” Fernandes told TNT Sports. "In the first 20 minutes, the goalkeeper was the one with the most touches. We needed to press more, be more aggressive, and then again we need to work on set-plays and not concede these type of goals. Against these types of teams, they are waiting for that moment.”

Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, questioned why United were making the same mistakes in away fixtures.

“It’s a strange quote from Bruno,” Rooney said on Match of the Day. “I think for Manchester United now to build on what they did last season, since Michael went in they finished third in the Premier League and got Champions League football, to build on that you have to become a team who teams are scared of playing against.”

Bruno Fernandes underlines priority to get right at home vs Ipswich

“We need to work on whatever didn't work, we need to get better and prepare for the next game,” Fernandes adds on MUTV.

“There is a lot we can do in the next game. The first home game, it'll be massive for us, even more now we gave this away vs Hull City, we really need a result in the next one."

Hull 'wanted it more' admits ex-Man United defender Wes Brown

"On paper, yes, we're supposed to go out and win this game, but the game showed Hull brought intensity and they run more, they wanted it a little bit more,” Wes Brown says on MUTV.

“They got their goals flooding the box, picking up second balls. It's always difficult to come back from 2-0 at half-time, we didn't have the rhythm, we weren't sharp. If you look at possession you'd think we'd win 3-1, Hull did what they needed to do."

Bruno Fernandes responds to defeat at Hull City

"Not what we wanted, we conceded two goals from set-pieces, we had a lot of the ball but we weren't decisive. We have to give credit to them, they defended very well their box,” Fernandes told MUTV. “

We should have been aware of that, every game is tough in the Premier League, they will be aggressive, the grounds they are against us, the set-pieces, it's their strength, but at the end of the day we conceded by a set-piece again.”

REPORT Shambolic Man United exposed by a familiar mistake in stunning Hull loss

Football, bloody Hull, to misquote Sir Alex Ferguson. The first shock of the season came on the banks of the Humber and at the expense of Ferguson’s former club. Inspired for half a season under Michael Carrick, Manchester United were insipid at the beginning of his first full campaign in charge. “Bitterly disappointed,” he said as Hull showed their capacity for surprises was not confined to an unexpected promotion.

This was spectacular stuff from Sergey Jakirovic’s team and, amid the inquest into a dreadful United display, it should not be forgotten that the deserved winners were superb. Defiant in defence, ruthless when they glimpsed an opportunity, justifying their nickname with their tigerish approach to closing down, they carried their momentum from Wembley in May back home.

Man Utd urged to sign new striker before transfer deadline

“The squad depth is good, they could do with another striker option, Sesko didn't start,” Owen Hargraves says on TNT Sports.

“Baleba coming in, it's a good squad, a top four squad. I thought they were best counter-attacking teams. When they had to make the ball, they didn't look like scoring.

“I think they'll go back to the drawing board, can we make the pitch a bit bigger, get Bruno on the ball.”
