Brighton & Hove Albion are monitoring Benfica centre-back Tomás Araújo, with head coach Fabian Hurzeler tracking the 24-year-old, though a January departure is viewed as unlikely.

The Portugal international was watched last month. TEAMtalk reports that Chelsea, managed by Xabi Alonso, are also among the clubs keeping close tabs on him.

Araújo recently signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract at Benfica that includes an €80 million release clause.

Benfica are not believed to consider bids below that figure during the season, so leading suitors may have to wait until next summer.

Manchester United are said to have intensified checks after Araújo’s display against Milan, while in Germany he has again been linked with Bayern Munich, including talk of a €30 million proposal in summer 2027.

Araújo has six caps for Portugal and joined Benfica in July 2022.
