It has been a difficult first half of the season for Morgan Sanson (31), who, having been such a key part in the run-in last season, found himself used sparingly during the Autumn.
Prior to the start of December, Sanson had made just one start for OGC Nice in Ligue 1. It was quite the fall from grace for a player who was so important for the club, initially on loan, and then after recovering from a serious ankle injury last season.
Sanson says that his lack of game time in the opening knockings of this season “hurt him physically” and meant he couldn’t give the best version of himself. “I’m playing more and feel better. That is football,” said the Frenchman in a press conference attended by Get French Football News.
Sanson revealed that his relationship with now-former manager Franck Haise had broken down, with little communication between the pair. “It was a bit difficult with Haise. We no longer had much communication. I have my share of responsibility, of course, and I regret that a bit. I could have gone to him, but he didn’t come to me either. I felt that he didn’t trust me, even if before he left, I started to play again,” said the Nice midfielder.
Haise departed at the end of December and was replaced by Claude Puel. In the absence of club captain Dante, out with injury, it is Sanson who has worn the armband. “A bit of trust has been shown in me, and I want to repay it,” said the former Aston Villa man, who says that he is now feeling back to his best, in a system that he prefers and with a manager who has shown faith in his abilities.
