Ed Sheeran has finally come out clean, explaining what prompted him to interrupt Ruben Amorim, who was being interviewed on Sky Sports.

The Portuguese manager made his debut as Manchester United head coach against Ipswich Town at Portman Road. The contest ended in a 1-1 draw, but an unusual post-match incident dominated the headlines the following day.

After the final whistle, Amorim was having his first post-match interview with Sky Sports, which included a curious interaction with Man Utd legend Roy Keane.

Nevertheless, there was nothing the former United captain could do or say to steal the limelight away from Sheeran who suddenly popped up in the middle of the interview much to the delight and bewilderment of the viewers watching the broadcast.

The famous singer and songwriter is a minority stakeholder at Ipswich, so he was never going to miss the Red Devils’ visit to Portman Road. However, he admitted making a mistake by jumping into the middle of the broadcast.

The 34-year-old had apologised for the incident the following day, but he has finally revealed the real reason that sparked the whole episode.

Sheeran admitted he may have drunk a bit too much during the contest, so he wasn’t necessarily thinking straight.

“Like that United game where I didn’t realise [Ruben] Amorim was getting interviewed. I honestly didn’t,” said the famous British artist in his interview with Men in Blazers.

“Jamie [Redknapp] said come and see me afterwards and I was wandering out afterwards. I’d had about 10 pints, saw Jamie, so I was like ‘Oh, I’ll go up and say hi to Jamie’.

“It was the wrong time – very clearly the wrong time – but I have learned my lesson and it won’t happen again.”

Although Amorim looked perplexed and irritated at first, he later insisted he wasn’t deranged by the whole debacle.
