Liverpool’s latest attacking addition, Alexander Isak, has already made his mark at Anfield. The Sweden international found the net in a 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Southampton, giving him his first goal in a Liverpool shirt.
The forward struck late in the first half to open the scoring, setting the tone for what proved to be a competitive tie. Southampton, determined to test Arne Slot’s side, levelled through Shea Charles before Hugo Ekitike produced a decisive finish to send Liverpool through to the next round.
Reflecting on the occasion, Isak described the moment as special. Speaking to ITV Sport after the match, he said: “Amazing. It was good to get back out there and score my first goal here, at Anfield. The win as well. So, it’s a good night.”
For a player whose reputation was built on sharp movement and clinical finishing, getting that first goal is always significant. Even though he admitted frustration at missing an earlier chance, he quickly put it into perspective: “I should have scored that one [the chance early on] as well, but that’s a part of being a striker, you miss some and then you score some.”

Liverpool fans will be encouraged by Isak’s progress after a stop-start beginning to his career on Merseyside. The striker has already featured three times in the space of a week, showing signs of improved sharpness. His own assessment was positive: “I feel good, I feel good. I think with every game I play it’s very helpful and gets me in better shape. I’m just getting more and more ready.”
Asked about his physical condition, Isak struck a balanced tone. “It’s difficult to say. I think it’s a mixture of fitness-wise and also football-wise. I feel good, I feel like I’m in a shape to at least make a difference.”
Arne Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut campaign, will welcome the depth his squad is beginning to show. Isak, at 26, has the potential to add a new dimension to Liverpool’s attack. Alongside the pace of Darwin Núñez and the intelligence of Cody Gakpo, the Swede offers another reliable focal point in forward areas.
The victory over Southampton not only gave Isak confidence but also underlined the importance of competition for places. With Ekitike scoring the winner, Slot now has multiple forwards pushing each other for regular starts. This depth may prove decisive as Liverpool look to defend their Premier League crown while competing on several fronts.
For Liverpool supporters, seeing Isak off the mark is a welcome sight. Goals in cup competitions often serve as springboards for players, and with his confidence visibly growing, he looks increasingly ready to play a larger role in the months ahead.
As for Southampton, their spirited display will encourage them as they continue their own campaign. But for Liverpool, the night belonged to Isak, a striker with the tools to become a central figure under Slot.
