Two years ago, Levi Colwill was just a young talent we had high hopes for.

Now, he’s a senior figure in the team. Two years of playing regularly, two trophies, an England callup and a true rollercoaster of results, transfers and different coaches have made him incredibly mature for a man who only turned 22 in February.

He is one of Enzo Maresca’s most used players, and played a crucial role in the Club World Cup win. He spoke to the club’s official website about that experience:

“Our confidence grew with every win and we kept building on that. Anything can happen in tournament football, and we believed in that,” the central defender said.

The win over PSG in the final was truly impressive as the Blues were considered serious outsiders. But as Colwill explained, they were just taking it one game at a time:

“Confidence was growing and we just took it one game at a time, that’s why we did so well at the tournament and in the final. Before the game, we were all talking and saying we believe in ourselves. At the start of the game, we set the tone straight away, pressing high,” Colwill explained.

“We knew it was our last game of football for the season, so there was no way we were going to go away on holiday and sit there thinking: ‘I wish I had given that little bit more for the team’. I told everyone that before, and we went out there and gave everything. That’s what the scoreline reflects and it’s why we won.”

Chelsea back to winning ways for good claims Colwill

Chelsea have been through a tough few years, but this was their second trophy in a couple of months, and according to the academy product, there are many more to come:

“It’s what Chelsea do. Chelsea win, it’s as simple as that! It’s huge to win another trophy. For the fans firstly, they’ve got bragging rights over every single club in the world now. Nobody can tell them they haven’t won this; they’ve won everything. That’s the main thing.

“Also, going into the new season and the Champions League, hopefully our confidence will be high and we can go rolling in, trying to win every game possible. That was the aim at the start of this season and that’s the aim for the new season. Take it game by game and try to win every game.

“That’s the mindset you’ve got to have when you’re a Chelsea player. We all believe in it and hopefully we can do wonderful things next season.”
