Noel Whelan has insisted Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford was not upset about being substituted against Everton but was “angry” at an incident on the field.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Whites forward who was covering the game for BBC Leeds spotted the Englishman discussing an incident in the game with a member of the coaching staff after he left the field of play.
Bamford was replaced in stoppage time by record signing Rodrigo Moreno with the Yorkshire giants leading Everton 1-0.
Leeds attacker Pablo Hernandez reacted angrily after being substituted against Leicester City at the beginning of the month and has not featured since.
He apologised for his actions after being left out against Crystal Palace and has subsequently picked up an injury that has kept him out of Leeds’ last two games.
Whelan insisted that Bamford’s actions were not out of anger like his teammate.
He told Football Insider: “There were question marks about whether he was angry because he was taken off.
“The way I took it, it was over something that went on in the game and he took it to one of the staff.
“I don’t think it was petulance about being taken off. We’ve seen that happen many times and he’s never spat his dummy out or done something like that.
“I think it was something that happened on the field. From when I was watching him and the way he was with one of the members of staff, I don’t think it was regarding being taken off.
“If it was then great, I like people who want to stay on and score goals. There was more to it than just that.”
In other Leeds United news, Kevin Phillips has tipped the club to sign a Liverpool star and a deal could happen in January.
