Corinthians centre-back Iago Machado, 17, made his first-team debut in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Flamengo in the 27th round of the Brasileirão, emphasising the mental work needed to seize an opportunity.

According to Meu Timao, he said post-match that readiness is mainly about mindset, that chances can arrive suddenly and that he had focused on this with family and team-mates to earn his bow.

Composed alongside fellow academy graduate João Pedro Tchoca, he registered 14 defensive actions, won four duels and made one recovery across more than 90 minutes.

Time training with the seniors, he added, helped him adapt tactically and physically. He contrasted the quicker base-game rhythm with the more studied, cautious and physical demands at professional level.

A standout of the 2009 generation and Corinthians’ best player at the 2026 Copinha, Machado had already been seen as capable of stepping up, a view reinforced after Fernando Diniz began including him in first-team squads.

Monitored by European clubs, he signed an addendum in October 2025 setting release clauses of R$ 66 million domestically and 100 million euros abroad, and his deal runs until 16 April 2028.

Machado remains available to Diniz and should be in the squad to face Estudiantes on Wednesday in the Libertadores quarter-final second leg. The expectation is he also returns to the Under-20 for the Paulista run-in while staying involved with the Under-17 in the Brazilian age-group championship.
