Cathro began his coaching career in Portugal and Spain, then moved to Newcastle United and Hearts. He reunited with Nuno at Valencia and, in 2018, joined Wolves as first-team coach, spending three years at Molineux before following Nuno to Tottenham.

Nuno later took him to Saudi Arabia, after which Cathro struck out on his own at Estoril. Regarded as one of the smallest clubs in the top division, Estoril have delivered two top 10 finishes across the past two campaigns.

Ties between Wolves and Estoril extend beyond Cathro, with Wolves having signed players from the Portuguese side or with stints there, including Toti Gomes and Chiquinho.
