Ian Cathro, 39, has been appointed ASSE head coach on a two-year contract after leaving Estoril. He succeeds Philippe Montanier.
The appointment was made official at 18:00 on Monday, according to Le Progres. Cathro had led Estoril since 2024, finishing 8th then 10th in the Portuguese league.
The Scot previously worked as an assistant at Newcastle, Valencia and Al-Ittihad, and had a more difficult spell in charge of Hearts in his homeland.
The move is another gamble by Kilmer following the Eirik Horneland setback. ASSE president Ivan Gazidis said the choice reflects Cathro’s ability to set a clear direction, improve players and create a demanding working environment.
Cathro becomes the club’s 43rd head coach and will take his first session on 1 July, when the professional group returns. He has spoken of joining a club apart with strong expectations, and of building a side that knows what it wants to do and works with intensity.
