Sheffield United have offered Jairo Riedewald a trial.
Sheffield United recently offered former Crystal Palace and Ajax defender Jairo Riedewald a trial with the club.
The Blades’ horrific start to the 2025/26 campaign has been widely reported, with the disappointment of last season’s failed promotion bid impacting their competitiveness in the new term.
Ruben Selles was appointed as the Steel City side’s manager after Chris Wilder was dismissed in the summer, but failed to galvanise the Blades’ squad.
United started the new season with five straight defeats for just the second time in their history, which was enough to see Selles receive his marching orders.
Wilder was subsequently brought back, but further losses against Charlton Athletic and Southampton show that turning things around at Bramall Lane won’t be a quick fix.
To aid this situation, the Blades’ boss is looking to bring in some fresh blood.
The Sheffield Star recently revealed that Riedewald has been offered a trial at the club and could join Danny Ings and Ben Mee as recent free agent acquisitions.
Amid this news, Football League World has taken a look at two of Sheffield United’s current centre-backs who won’t be pleased about the Dutchman’s potential arrival.
Tyler Bindon was brought in from Nottingham Forest this summer on a season-long loan deal as an exciting option for Sheffield United’s defensive department, but has failed to live up to expectations thus far.
Under Selles, the 20-year-old was a regular starter, beginning the defeats against Bristol City, Swansea City, Millwall and Middlesbrough respectively.
Although not majorly disappointing, the New Zealand international didn’t overly impress either, and is yet to play a minute since Wilder’s arrival, having been an unused substitute against Oxford United, Southampton and Hull City respectively.
The last thing Bindon needs is another defender to come into the club who he has to compete with, especially when selected by United’s new manager.
If Riedewald is signed permanently, Bindon and Nottingham Forest may begin to seriously question whether Bramall Lane is the place for him to continue his development this season.
Ben Mee signed for Sheffield United in the summer as a free agent after a short period of time training with the group following his departure from Premier League side Brentford, and has impressed so far.
The 36-year-old’s experience will go a long way in helping the younger members of the Blades’ squad deal with their current turmoil, both on and off the pitch, with the former England youth international having made over 270 Premier League appearances during his career, as well as over 150 in the Championship.
However, the defender’s age doesn’t work in his favour when a 46-game Championship season is taken into account.
Clearly, Wilder is actively looking to improve in defensive areas with the decision to offer Riedewald a trial, and if the Dutchman does sign permanently, it seems unlikely that Japhet Tanganga or Mark McGuinness will be dropped from the starting XI.
Given that Mee has been the other starting centre-back in recent times, he seems the most likely pick to lose his place in the squad.
Therefore, the former Brentford and Burnley man will be another player in the Sheffield United camp hoping that the Steel City side decide against signing Riedewald.
