Liverpool’s frustrating 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur has intensified scrutiny around Arne Slot’s position, and few voices captured the mood around Anfield more candidly than Lewis Steele. Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, the Daily Mail journalist delivered a blunt assessment of Liverpool’s current trajectory.
With Liverpool sitting fifth in the table and performances failing to convince, the conversation between Steele and Davis painted a picture of a team searching for answers under Arne Slot.
Early in the podcast, Dave Davis referenced Steele’s immediate reaction after the match, reading out his tweet: “So, so, so poor from Liverpool again. And I would have said the same if they held on to win. How many times this season have they put in a nothing performance like that? So vulnerable, so naive, so unimaginative. Boring. Both teams got what they deserved.”
Steele stood by the criticism when discussing the draw on Media Matters. He admitted the experience of covering Liverpool this season had been draining.
“Covering this club this season has taken a few years off my life because it’s been terrible to watch. Every match that you go to has felt like a chore.”
For Steele, the Tottenham game merely continued a familiar pattern under Arne Slot.
“I end up finding myself having to write the same thing over and over again, and then they’ll just get a little good win out of nowhere, and you think, oh, maybe they’re on the way back up, and then it all comes crashing back down again.”
Much of the discussion centred on the responsibility of Liverpool manager Arne Slot. While Steele acknowledged the players must share blame, he made clear where ultimate accountability lies.
“When we criticise Slot we should also say that it’s not just his fault and it is the player’s fault as well, but the buck does have to stop with Slot and he knows that.”
He went further, arguing that Liverpool’s performances throughout the campaign have rarely reached an acceptable level.
“Liverpool haven’t been good enough in any game this season really. Even when they’ve been winning games, I think they’ve been pretty bad. And that’s mainly Arne Slot’s fault.”
Steele also questioned whether Liverpool’s league position accurately reflects their performances. After watching every match this season, he offered a stark opinion.
“I actually look at it and think, do you know what? Maybe they’re in a false position in a good way because I’ve watched every game this season and I think they should be about tenth.”

The atmosphere inside Anfield also became a talking point during the podcast. Dave Davis referenced Dominic Szoboszlai’s post match comments about the crowd, prompting Steele to address the audible frustration from supporters.
When Szoboszlai claimed he had not heard boos from the stands, Steele responded with humour but also with clarity about the mood inside the stadium.
“He might want to get his hearing checked because those boos were loud and they were noticeable.”
Steele argued that the reaction from Liverpool supporters was understandable given the team’s struggles.
“It’s not a Liverpool thing to do to boo. But it’s also not a Liverpool thing to play this badly over the whole season and not learn from the mistakes.”
He pointed to repeated tactical issues that have persisted throughout the campaign.
“It’s the naivety of just going back again and again, making the same mistakes over and over again, not changing the players, not changing the system.”
With Liverpool still competing in multiple competitions, Steele suggested the coming fixtures could determine the long term future of Arne Slot at the club.
“I think tomorrow is the biggest game of the season because if they lose that, then it’s absolutely terrible.”
The wider consequences could be severe. Steele warned that an early European exit could leave the manager struggling to recover the support of the fanbase.
“If they go out on Wednesday, I think he is past the point of no return.”
For now, Liverpool remain in contention for Champions League qualification, yet performances continue to raise questions. As the conversation between Dave Davis and Lewis Steele made clear on Media Matters, the final months of the season will shape not only Liverpool’s campaign but also the long term future of Arne Slot at Anfield.
