Leeds United have reignited their pursuit of Igor Paixao for a second straight summer, yet the 26-year-old intends to stay at Marseille.

As reported by Foot Mercato, the winger appeared again on Leeds’ shortlist. Marseille are seeking to streamline their squad and raise funds, which sparked fresh talk of a move.

Last year Leeds tabled multiple offers for the then Feyenoord flier. Marseille instead struck a €35m (£30m) deal, and Paixao chose the Stade Velodrome and continental football.

A recent post from his partner, saying the Velodrome would always remain in her heart, briefly fuelled online chatter. His stance is firm, he has no intention of leaving France simply because the club must balance the books.

Three factors underpin that resolve. Paixao has built a strong understanding with Bruno Genesio, who sees him as central and expects greater leadership from him this season. He has scored three pre-season goals after a 12-goal, 7-assist debut campaign in France.

Owner Frank McCourt and the board have set a €50m (£43m) valuation, far above Leeds’ stance for a player they view as a third-choice contingency. With 31 starts last term and a manager who rates him essential, Paixao is set to remain Marseille’s main man in Provence. Daniel Farke’s side are almost certain to sign a winger before the deadline, but it will not be Paixao.
