A Basque flag drew attention in the Monterrey stands as Japan swept past Tunisia 4-0 at the World Cup. According to Diario Vasco, the ikurriña appeared repeatedly on the television broadcast.
At Anoeta, Japanese flags often dot a sea of ikurriñas and Real Sociedad colours. In Mexico it was the reverse, with Basque supporters backing Japan, waving their flag as the players celebrated.
The goals came from Kamada, Ueda twice, and Junya Ito. Take Kubo, a leading figure for Japan and Real Sociedad, did not feature on this second matchday in Monterrey.
Kubo’s tournament has not begun well despite his team’s bright start. He left the opening game in the 70th minute.
He tried to test himself on the touchline to return, but pain prevented it and he was substituted. His absence in Mexico disappointed Real Sociedad fans who had bought tickets to see one of their players at the World Cup.
