Ilija Despotovic resigned from Lausanne Sport three and a half hours before a Swiss Cup match for which he had been named in the squad.

The club said in a statement that it regretted the circumstances and timing of the decision, and that it reserves the right to undertake legal action to protect its interests.

The 18-year-old did not take part in FC Lausanne-Sport’s tie against FC Kosova Neuchâtel on Friday 14 August.

Despotovic progressed through the academy on the north shore of Lake Geneva. He began pre-season with the U21s before joining the professional group.

He made his first senior appearances against Basel, then featured against Young Boys, providing an assist in seven minutes on the pitch.
