Leeds United said on Wednesday that French goalkeeper Illan Meslier will leave when his contract expires on 30 June, ending a seven-season spell at the club.

Leeds finished 14th in the most recent Premier League season. After five seasons as first-choice, Meslier lost his place this term.

He joined from Lorient in January 2020 as a highly rated France Under-21 international, earning 13 caps at that level. He made 215 appearances for Leeds, including 107 in the Premier League.

Following an initial bedding-in year, he kept goal as number one for five straight seasons, two under Marcelo Bielsa. The high point was a ninth-place finish in 2020-21.

This season the Welsh veteran Karl Darlow, 35, shared duties with former Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri, leaving Meslier without an appearance. He will now seek a new challenge to revive his career.
