Leeds United have confirmed that Illan Meslier will leave this summer, with the club’s retained list due by noon today. The club said in a statement that he will depart at the end of his Elland Road deal.
The Frenchman arrived on loan from FC Lorient in 2019 and was thrust into the first team late that season during Kiko Casilla’s racism ban. He helped Marcelo Bielsa’s side win the Championship.
Meslier kept the gloves for most of Leeds’ three Premier League seasons, until Sam Allardyce replaced him for the closing matches during a failed survival bid.
Under Daniel Farke he was number one for almost two full seasons, then Karl Darlow took over for the promotion run-in, ending Meslier’s first-team involvement. Last season the goalkeeping duties were shared by new signing Lucas Perri and Darlow.
He contributed to the promotion-winning campaigns of 2019/20 and 2024/25, departs as a two-time champion, and is considered part of the club’s history, as well as a strong team-mate and a constant competitor. Meslier made 215 appearances for Leeds and kept 72 clean sheets.
