Gabriel Gudmundsson says he is ready to compete again after an injury-hit start to Leeds United’s 2026/27 campaign, admitting his body has taken a beating.
“It hasn't been super optimal for me. I went to the back [injury] in the pre-season. Then it was straight into the Premier League and I started straight away, Brighton away. Since then it has gone well, but it's clear that my body has taken a beating,” he said, speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanlen.
The left-back missed the final three pre-season games and the first three league fixtures after an August collision against Liverpool, landing awkwardly on his back. He played on before going down holding his hamstring and was forced off, with Daniel Farke confirming a muscle injury.
He returned after one month to play 90 minutes at Brighton in September, then was substituted in each of Leeds’ last two league matches. Melvin Bard covered much of last month’s Carabao Cup defeat at Chelsea, with Gudmundsson introduced late as Leeds chased goals.
“Brenden Aaronson, a teammate, called me in the afternoon. He was like, ‘What the hell is going on?!’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘The knee.’ He linked to someone on social media writing that it was the knee, seven-eight months. I don't know, sometimes you shouldn't trust too much what is written. It is what it is, it wasn't true.”
The 27-year-old was on the bench for Sweden’s 2-1 Nations League win over Romania on Friday, coming on with six minutes left for Sebastian Nanasi. Asked if that rest was down to any issues, he said: “My body feels good, I'm ready. There's no problem.”
