The Blue Girls ended the season with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Walton Hall Park on Saturday. Veatriki Sarri’s early goal gave Everton the lead but Spurs soon levelled matters through Drew Spence. The result meant that the Merseyside club ended the campaign in eighth position in the league table.
When speaking to the media after the game, Everton boss Sørensen shared his thoughts on his team’s performance.
“We pulled everything into the game in terms of trying to win it,” Sørensen said. “I think we started very brightly and had some good opportunities. I’m frustrated that we didn’t take advantage and also, it was a frustrating goal where we just missed an offside. Credit to the girls for trying to put everything into it.”
It’s been a tough season for The Toffees. They had to wait until December for a long-awaited takeover to be completed and have had to deal with some long-term injuries to key players. Sørensen has been pleased with how his group have battled on through every challenge and he believes that the future of the team is bright.
He said “We’ve been one goal [away] from finishing sixth. If you look at how we started the season; ACL injuries to some of our most important players and then midway through, our captain goes out. I’m so proud of how the girls have acted, they’ve been working extremely hard.
“I think with what we had to start with and the money we’ve been spending, it’s not like we’ve been spending a lot in the winter window. We found Kelly [Gago], nobody knew about it and got her cheap. We have achieved massively if you look at the money we’ve been spending, so I’m happy with that. Hopefully, now we’ll have a little more to spend and can overachieve again.”
Going on to discuss summer recruitment, Sørensen says that he is keen to strengthen his squad with the focus being on having a slightly younger group in 2025/2026.
He said “We’ll be looking to strengthen the squad. You saw today that we have a lot of youngsters on the bench and we have a lot of good players out.
“I think the overall plan is to maybe lower the average age in the group a little, so we have a better future in-front of us, not that I have been unhappy with anyone that I have. They’ve been doing really well, we’re doing really well in that part, so I’m very excited for the future.”
Everton’s eighth-place finish equals their record from last season. The club will be aiming to climb the table next term.
