Renato Marin, PSG’s 19-year-old third-choice goalkeeper, impressed in the 1-0 win over Brest, reviving the question of whether he could become Matveï Safonov’s deputy if Lucas Chevalier leaves.
According to L'Équipe, Chevalier suffered a thigh injury in training 10 days ago and Safonov was rested, handing Marin successive Ligue 1 starts. He was solid in the 2-2 at Lorient, then sharper against Brest. Luis Enrique praised his readiness.
He was alert on 23 minutes, racing out to thwart Doumbia after a flick released him. He then blocked Le Guen at point-blank range on 29 minutes, punched clear from a free-kick on 77 minutes and tipped away Magnetti’s drive on 84 minutes.
This run will not change the goalkeeper hierarchy before the Champions League final in Budapest on 30 May. The Italian can still look beyond that, depending on Chevalier’s situation.
Chevalier, relegated to number two behind Safonov since winter, may not accept the same role next season. If there is no reshuffle, a departure is not excluded, influenced by the fee after PSG paid 55m euros including bonuses for the ex-Lille keeper, or by a possible loan. Should he go, Paris could weigh an experienced signing while Marin uses each minute to strengthen his case and perhaps earn one or two more outings.
