In Brasileirão win, midfielder returns for Corinthians after a month out

Corinthians, with a goal by defensive midfielder Maycon, beat Atlético-MG on the night of Saturday, October 18, at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 29th round of the Brazilian Championship. The triumph made the Alvinegro jump to 12th place, provisionally, with 36 points (nine wins, nine draws and 11 losses – 31 goals scored and 35 conceded).

In addition to the three points, the match marked the return of defensive midfielder Charles to the pitch after just over a month due to recurring pain in his right knee. His previous match had been on September 10, when Corinthians beat Athletico-PR at home, 2–0, in the second leg of the Brasileirão quarterfinals.

In tonight’s match, the midfielder was called upon in the 44th minute of the second half, coming on for Breno Bidon. In the 3–1 midweek defeat to Santos at Vila Belmiro in the Brasileirão, the player returned to the squad list but did not come off the bench.

In just over a month away from the pitch, Charles missed the following Corinthians matches: Fluminense (A), Sport (A), Flamengo (H), Internacional (A) and Mirassol (H), all valid for the Brazilian Championship.

Signed by the Alvinegro in the mid-2024 transfer window after a stint in Danish football, the defensive midfielder was part of the team’s surge in the last edition of the national tournament, in which the team climbed out of the relegation zone and finished in the qualifying spots for the Pré-Libertadores – seventh place with 56 points.

He was also part of the squad that won the 2025 Paulistão, defeating Palmeiras in the final. Since arriving at Corinthians, he has made 55 appearances (28 as a starter), with 29 wins, 19 draws and seven losses – just over a 64% success rate. In addition, he has scored one goal and provided one assist.

Now recovered from injury, Charles will be available for Corinthians’ next match. The Alvinegro will return to the pitch next Saturday, October 25, at 4 p.m. (Brasília time), for the 30th round of the Brasileirão, at Estádio Barradão, to face Vitória.
