The future of Max Eberl continues to be discussed behind the scenes at FC Bayern. In the event that the sporting director does not receive a new contract, there already appears to be a possible succession scenario internally

The future of Max Eberl at FC Bayern remains open. Although his contract still runs until 2027, those responsible have apparently been discussing the question of how the sporting management should be set up in the future

As the Münchner Abendzeitung reports, a successor solution is already being considered in the event that Eberl does not receive a new contract, with the focus primarily on the internal structure and less on a prominent external name

According to the report, it would be a conceivable scenario that Christoph Freund is further upgraded at the club and takes on even more responsibility in the future. The sporting director apparently enjoys a great deal of trust internally and is seen as an important component of the sporting management at Säbener Straße

Freund has worked for FC Bayern since 2023 and is primarily responsible for squad planning, scouting and development around the campus. Should Eberl actually leave the club, the Austrian could move further up the sporting hierarchy

At the same time, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen could also take on an even more important role in the strategic management of sporting decisions. According to the report, it is possible that the tasks between Dreesen and Freund will be more closely bundled instead of hiring an external sports director

This would change the management structure at FC Bayern without necessarily having to appoint an external successor

Eberl’s future remains an open question

The fact that Eberl is currently being discussed so intensively is not entirely surprising. Sport BILD recently reported that his chances of having his contract extended are currently only around 50:50

The 52-year-old’s sporting record is certainly positive. FC Bayern is playing a strong season, is on course to win the Bundesliga, is in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup and can also continue to have hopes in the Champions League

The signing of Vincent Kompany has paid off so far, while transfers such as Michael Olise, Luis Diaz and Jonathan Tah have also been rated positively

Nevertheless, Eberl’s future remains open, but one thing is clear: if it does not come to an extension in the end, FC Bayern apparently already has a plan in mind.
