Cesar Peixoto arrives in English football as an unknown, Wolves’ pick recalling Fosun’s first managerial appointment, Walter Zenga.
ExpressAndStar.com points out that even Zenga was an Italy international with more than 300 Inter Milan appearances, while Peixoto’s Portugal career was a brief 2008 friendly cameo in defeat to Brazil.
They share rapid job turnover. Peixoto is set for his ninth role in a little over seven years, including second spells at two clubs.
His best work has been at Gil Vicente, who he leaves. Last season they were sixth in the Portuguese First Division, among their best.
His 16 months in Barcelos is his longest tenure. Before February last year, he had never completed more than 30 matches in a post.
A Vitor Guimaraes academy graduate, he rose from Cacadores Taipas and Belenenses to Porto, where Jose Mourinho was just starting to make his name. A Champions League knee injury against Marseille checked his rise, after loans to Guimaraes and Espanyol he later joined Braga and Benfica, winning the 2010 double.
He ended his playing days with two-and-a-half years at Gil Vicente, retiring in 2014. Nearly five years later he kept Varzim up, then had short stints at Coimbra, Chaves and Moreirense totalling 33 matches.
Two spells at Pacos Ferreira followed, culminating in relegation in 2023. After a year out he returned to Moreirense in summer 2024, was sacked after seven months, then joined Gil Vicente, where his trajectory since has been upward. Wolves will hope that continues.
