Wolverhampton Wanderers should consider a move for Ipswich Town goalkeeper Kayne van Oevelen amid Valencia agreement

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Cesar Peixoto is running out of time to complete some crucial business at Molineux before the closure of the summer transfer window, as their return to the second tier did not get off to the greatest of beginnings.

Indeed, Wolves did not begin their return to the Championship for the first time in over eight years the way they would have wanted, scrambling to a 2-2 draw at home to relegation-tipped Blackburn Rovers.

Marshall Munetsi put the Old Gold ahead in the clash, but Sean McLoughlin's header equalised the tie, as Andri Gudjohnsen put the away side in front just after half-time, before Raul Jimenez's penalty rescued a point for the Black Country outfit.

Criticised for his role in the equaliser was goalkeeper Daniel Bentley, who has since left the club to join top-flight newbies Coventry City, leaving Jose Sa and Sam Johnstone battling for a place between the sticks.

However, it is not crystal clear who will become Peixoto's number one, or whether, indeed, either will be at the club come the end of the window, as Wolves should look to hijack a move to bring in a Premier League shot-stopper on loan.

Bentley was chosen as Peixoto's number one in their Championship opener to Blackburn, with Sa only managing a place on the bench.

Johnstone is still recovering from surgery undergone on his shoulder over the summer, but has stepped up his rehabilitation, and is expected to be fit and available sooner rather than later.

However, murmurs of exit for both have persisted since relegation, and there remains a very distinct possibility that both could leave the club over the coming week or so, as Wolves should look to hijack Valencia's move for Ipswich Town goalkeeper Kayne van Oevelen.

Van Oevelen, 23, had agreed a deal to join Spanish outfit Valencia on loan for the season, but following injuries to Alex Palmer and Christian Walton, the deal has stalled, as Wolves should swoop in under their noses to seal his addition.

Van Oevelen joined Ipswich this summer from FC Volendam for around £3.4 million after an excellent year in the Eredivisie, where he has averaged a 7.21 rating, as per FotMob.

The likes of Millwall, Middlesbrough, Wrexham, and Bolton Wanderers were all previously interested in a loan swoop for the 23-year-old, with a move to the Championship looking likely prior to his decision to join Valencia.

However, a window of opportunity has opened for Wolves, who should be doing everything in their power to convince the Dutchman to make the move to the Midlands instead.

Standing at 6ft 6 inches tall, the Dutchman's aerial reach is almighty, as opposing attackers face a daunting task when bearing down on goal with him between the sticks.

Statistically the best goalkeeper in the Eredivisie last season in terms of save percentage and saves per 90, the Old Gold would be remiss not to attempt a late swoop for van Oevelen, and should be doing everything they can to tempt him to Molineux in case of Sa and Johnstone's departure.

Sa, 33, has attracted interest from Olympiakos in recent weeks, with the Portuguese shot-stopper's future yet to be decided by Peixoto.

There is every chance the five-capped Portugal international could become a mainstay for Wolves once again, but as for now, his future remains in doubt.

Johnstone, 33, joined Wolves just two years ago for £10 million from Crystal Palace, but has struggled to cement himself in between the sticks in the Black Country since his arrival, making just 27 appearances for the club across all competitions.

The Preston-born keeper attracted interest from Manchester United about becoming their third-choice option earlier in the summer, only for that role to be taken by Karl Darlow instead.

An exit could still be on the cards; however, a starting berth under Peixoto could be too upon his return from injury, with the former Gil Vicente having a huge decision to make before the window slams shut.

It's been a relatively quiet window for Wolves, especially since Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards at the helm, but things are showing signs of livening up recently.

Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez joined on free transfers before the 46-year-old's arrival, as Rafiki Said and more recently Jordan James joined under his watch.

Wolves fan pundit Thomas Woodhall has backed the Old Gold to sign Coventry City's Ellis Simms as another option for Jimenez and Adam Armstrong up top, with another one or two attacking options on the cards for the Old Gold.
