Rafael Leão and Gonçalo Inácio, both of whom featured in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Ireland on Saturday evening, are unfit for tomorrow’s match against Hungary and have been released from the Seleção squad.

Leão, who came on in the 61st minute against Ireland, has struggled for fitness all season. In 2025/26 the AC Milan winger has played a total of 94 minutes across 4 matches for his club and country.

“The decision to release Rafael Leão was made by Seleção coach Roberto Martínez after weighing up the physical condition of the player,” reported the Portuguese Football Federation. Leão will return to Italy to try and definitively shake off the injury.

Gonçalo Inácio started the Ireland match but picked up a knock and was substituted at half time by Renato Veiga. The Sporting centre-back was released from the squad on Monday.

Portugal face Hungary at the Estádio José Alvalade on Tuesday evening looking to make it four straight wins in their Group F World Cup qualifying campaign. Should they do so, the Seleção will practically guarantee finishing top of the group and booking their place in next summer’s tournament.

If Portugal win and Armenia fail to beat Ireland in Dublin, Portugal will have officially qualified for FIFA World Cup 2026 to be hosted in USA, Canada and Mexico.
